Sport For All South Africa was founded in 1997. The initial programs followed the traditional funding route which meant when funding ceased on certain projects the projects were shut down. Sport For All South Africa realised that there had to be a better solution.
The need for a self-sustaining sport program became critical for sport to be an effective tool for development. Franchising was identified as the system ideally suited to achieving sustainability. To convert the intellectual property to a franchise model, Sport For All South Africa partnered with True North Holdings in 2004, and jointly developed the social franchise model, and so Sport For All Franchising (Pty) Ltd, South Africa's first social franchise company was born.
An existing Sport For All project was converted to the social franchise model in 2006. The model was refined and tested for a full year prior to going to market in 2007.
